Bridge Fellowship

Bridge News

For some years, an Inter-Club Bridge League has been going on between the more well known social and recreational clubs in Hong Kong. Someone said that Rotarians in Hong Kong used to be rather active. Encouraged by the Hong Kong Contract Bridge Association, we were invited by the organizers in 2002 to join or re-join the league by fielding a team (of four) to play with other participating clubs in the league, taking turn to play host. The primary object is to promote fellowship between particpating clubs through bridge playing. I have been Team Captain for our team since.

Rotarians being busy people, the Rotary Team has not been able to perform at its peak due primarily to lack of practice. It has also been difficult to form fixed teams which in turn has affected partnership understanding. Consequently, we have been consistently near the bottom of the league. Things began to change in 2006; and we have been improving our scores at tournaments. We are happy to report that the improvement has continued in 2007; and so far we have had more than satisfactory results. We won two of the five matches we had played so far and did not lose too badly in the other three. We are now within the top three teams in terms of scores.

There are 11 Teams in the 2007 Session. Apart from ours, the other teams are Kowloon Cricket Club (2 teams); Jewish Community Centre; Hong Kong Country Club; Hong Kong Club; USRC; Gold Coast; Ladies Recreation Club; Indian Bridge Association; and Club de Recreio.

Since 2006, each team can field up to ten players, meaning that we have vacancies on our team. Ideally, we need more keen and regular players. In 2007, we have started practice sessions on Monday evenings; but once again, the difficulty is how to sustain interests amongst people with busy schedules.

We are hopeful that there are sufficient good and keen players in the District and we hope to form a Bridge Fellowship within the District which would promote recreational fellowship through bridge playing. We have plans to organize regular playing sessions and training sessions at different skill levels. We welcome your comments and participation.
