Have you been to
Macau?
Macau (pronounced
"Ou Mun" in the local Cantonese dialect)
is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China and is
located in Southern China bordering the South China Sea.
The original
inhabitants of Macau were believed to be fishermen from Fujian and
farmers from Guangdong. Due to its location, being at the mouth of
the Pearl River downstream from Guangzhou, Macau during the
ancient times was a port city which was part of the Silk Road and
ships here loaded silk for Rome. In 1513, the first Portuguese
merchant, Jorge Alvares, landed in southern China to look for
suitable trading posts. The Portuguese then came to Macau in the
early 1550s. They named our city Macau as the area they first set
set foot in Macau was called "A Ma Gao" (place of A Ma in
honour of the Goddess of sea-travellers, whose temple stood at the
entrance to the sheltered inner harbour). The name, A Ma Gao,
was gradually known as Macau. Macau soon became trading port
between China, Japan, India and Europe.
In
modern times Macau has developed industries such as textiles,
electronics and toys, as well as building up an a world class
tourist industry with a wide choice of hotels, resorts, sports
facilities, restaurants, world heritage sites and casinos.
